In 2015 the government announced that they will be investing GBP 85 000 000 a year for 4 years in BBC World Service launching 11 new services in the following languages: Afaan Oromo, Amharic, Gujarati, Igbo, Korean, Marathi, Pidgin, Punjabi, Telugu, Tigrinya, and Yoruba.
This means the BBC World Service will be available in 40 (currently 29) languages including English. The BBC World Service will also expand its digital services to offer more mobile and video content, a greater social media presence, and new ways of reaching its audience around the globe. This money will help build the global reach of the World Service and increase audience access to news and information and help achieve the overarching business objective of reaching 500 000 000 people per week by 2022.
